** Congregation Ahavat Olam’s musically uplifting weekly Shabbat service. **
Rabbi Idan's sermon for this Shabbat Nachamu, Parashat Va’etchanan, is: “Rooted in Tradition: Building a Stronger Jewish Tomorrow”.
Sermon excerpt: Jewish communities often use parts of this parsha, Va'etchanan, to convey the importance of transmitting these teachings to future generations, reinforcing the idea that Jewish identity is rooted in both historical experiences and ongoing practice. We have learned from Moses’ role as a leader, and the significance of his messages, to engage with our heritage actively.
Two years ago, when Congregation Ahavat Olam opened its doors, we heeded and applied Moses’ message.
We aimed to plant strong Jewish roots in our community that will last for many generations to come. These roots begin with our Hebrew school, one that aims to create a learning environment that promotes a positive Jewish identity, and fosters a warm sense of community for our students from pre-kindergarten through 10th grade and beyond.
We have sprouted branches, buds and leaves through B’nai Mitzvah celebrations and baby namings. We believe in hands-on learning of the Hebrew language, our holidays, traditions, some yummy food, and creating a joyful environment with skilled and creative teachers. We know our roots are being strengthened when our students arrive with smiles and leave with even wider ones!
